Effect of Heat Treatment on Microstructure Evolution of X38CrMoV5-1 Hot-Work Tool Steel Produced by L-PBF

Abstract The X38CrMoV5-1 hot-work tool steel produced by laser powder bed fusion was investigated to assess the effect of quenching and tempering direct on as-built microstructure. After printing process, material microstructure appeared be characterized a fine cellular network consisting γ -Fe cell boundaries α ′-Fe cores. Scheil–Gulliver curves, X-ray diffraction patterns, transmission electron microscopy images suggested transformation inner core zone from δ through -Fe. Air promoted transition solidification structure into fully martensitic Both quenched samples revealed presence manganese oxides vanadium carbonitrides forming core-shell structures. tempering, starting condition, dispersion nano-sized V Cr-rich second phases formed in microstructure, achieving hardness values comparable those obtained same alloy conventional methods. specimen tempered directly after process showed peak shifted towards higher temperatures compared conventionally sample.
